Emergency Procedures:
Introduction

There are many different types of emergencies that could occur on Library premises. The important thing to remember is to stay calm and not panic.

Branch Libraries: notify Public Safety at 911
Firestone Library: notify Library Security at 8-3221.

 

Emergency Procedures:
Bomb Threat

If you receive a telephone threat:

    When will the bomb explode?
    Where is it (which floor, area, etc.)?
    What does it look like?
    What kind of bomb is it?
    What will cause it to explode?
    When was it planted?
    Did the caller plant the bomb?
    Why?
    What is the caller's name?

     The exact words of the caller.
     The caller's gender.
     Any distinctive vocal characteristics.
     Any background noises.

Elevator Problems


Most elevators on campus have emergency telephones inside them to notify Campus Security that someone is stuck in the elevator. The newer telephones will be direct links to Public Safety, the older telephones require dialing 8-1000. For the older telephones, numbers for Public Safety are posted near the telephone.

If you are near an elevator and you hear someone who is stuck in the elevator:

Evacuation Procedures


Since an emergency may happen at any time, it is important that your work supervisor know of your whereabouts and of any changes that you make in your work schedule. This applies to student library assistants as well as regular staff. When you hear the fire alarm or are told to evacuate the building:

Branch Libraries should follow their own emergency action plans.

Fire


In the event of a fire:

Branch Libraries: notify Public Safety immediately at 911. Also notify Dottie Pearson (8-3215)
Firestone Library: notify Library Security immediately at 8-3221. Library Security will notify Public Safety and Dottie Pearson.

When you hear the fire alarm or are told to evacuate the building:

Branch Libraries should follw their own emergency action plans.

Both Firestone Library and the Branch Libraries are equipped with emergency lights that should come on in the event of a power outage.



Emergency Procedures:
Tornado


According to the National Weather Service, a Tornado Watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. A Tornado Warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted in the area and is a clear signal to take cover.
