Those who have watched its bold, curved stainless steel roofline emerge on the corner of Washington Road and Ivy Lane no doubt believe the Lewis Science Library designed by Frank Gehry will have a distinctive exterior look. A recent tour of the building’s yet unfinished rooms and halls shows an interior to match: glass walls jut down from the ceiling to create an enclosed area surrounded by an atrium; an opening between two floors appears in the shape of a star; large, adjacent walls are painted in such colors as bright blue, orange and chartreuse.

Alan Stahl Named a Guggenheim Fellow for 2008

Alan Stahl, the Library’s Curator of Numismatics, has been named a Guggenheim Fellow for 2008 as one of only 190 recipients from a pool of 2,600 applicants. The award from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation carries support for research for Stah’s next book project, The Nexus of Wealth and Power in Medieval Venice. Stahl plans to use the grant for six months of research in the Venetian archives to investigate the relationship of the rise of capitalism and the maintenance of republican government in fourteenth-century Venice. In order to keep the Princeton Numismatic Collection open for use by students and visitors during the academic year, Stahl plans to carry out the research during summer and winter breaks. The awards are given to scholars, scientists and artists who demonstrate “stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment,” according to a statement from the Foundation.
