Classification (LC) |
Cuttering for Ibn, Abu, etc.Names which begin with elements such as Ibn or Abu are nonetheless cuttered following the general rule unless a schedule specifically states otherwise. (This interpretation of the rules was reinforced in an AUTOCAT message of 12/14/2004 by a CPSO member of LC.) Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting G100: The result is that "Ibn al-Madani" and "Ibn al-Arabi" will both be cuttered as "I" followed by numbers representing "b, n, a", etc . An example of a specific instruction allowing variation from this rule occurs in PJ7836 for literary authors whose names begin with "Ibn" where the schedule calls for "Including all authors of this period whose last names are some form of this word. The Cutter number is determined by the next portion of the author's name." Last modified: October 26, 2006 |
