Literary author numbers
The practice of routinely checking the LC shelflist and the PUL shelflist when establishing call numbers for literary authors has been abandoned.

The procedure is as follows:

Step 1. Check for the existence of an LC-assigned call number for the author.

  • Imprints after 1990: Check for a call number in an 053 field on the NAF record for the author. If one exists, use it. End of procedure. If no LC number is found, go on to step 2.
  • Imprints before 1990: Check for a call number in an 053 field on the NAF record for the author. If one exists, use it. If no 053 is found, search RLIN by author, using the author's name as a subject when necessary. If a number is found, use it. Prefer current LC numbers to older ones when discrepancies exist. End of procedure. If no LC number is found, go on to step 2.

Step 2.Check our catalog to see if we have already assigned a number to the author. If we have, use that number (end of procedure). Consult with your team leader if a conflict is discovered at this point. If no author number is found in the catalog, go on to step 3.

Step 3. Assign a number to the author, fitting him/her into our collection using a call number search in our catalog. Be careful in those instances where the catalog does not index all call numbers in the same sequence (e.g., PQ3919.2.B364M3713 1986). If you are NACOing the author, you may follow the procedure to submit an 053 request. End of procedure.
