ML410-ML429
The call numbers for composers (ML410) and other musicians (ML411-ML429) do not necessarily follow Library of Congress cutters for these call numbers. A list of prominent composers and their cutter numbers in the ML410 schedule is available in the online documentation. Press: here to go directly to the list.

For any composer not on the list and for anyone else in the ML410-ML429 schedule, the catalog will serve as the main source for cutters. (Richard Wagner has some additional cutter extensions for correspondence, selections, etc.)

The following procedure should be followed to assign the proper ML410-ML429 number:

  1. Search the name as a subject.
  2. Check the call number in the MFHD record.
  3. In new cataloging, use the number found in our catalog up to the first cutter then supply the second cutter from the main entry. On LC or member copy, change the 1st cutter number to match the one found in our catalog. Leave the rest of the call number as it was.
  4. If an ML410-ML429 number for the composer/musician cannot be identified, fit him/her into the call number range alphabetically.

Example:

An LC record in RLIN contains the following fields:

050 ML410.C26‡bB34 1995

600 Caldara, Antonio,‡d1670-1736.

1. Search the subject heading in our catalog:

2. Check the call number in the MFHD record:

ML410.C13A85 1987

The first cutter is .C13 not .C26 as on the LC record.

3. In the MFHD for the new record, change the prompted 852 field to:

ML410.C13‡B34 1995

That is, replace the first cutter with the one from our catalog and leave the rest of the call number as it was. Produce the record.
