ML410-ML429

Princeton has historically assigned class numbers in the range ML410-ML429 (works about composers and performers) that differ slightly from those assigned by the Library of Congress. A project is now underway at the Mendel Music Library to reclassify thousands of books to bring their call numbers into conformity with those of LC. When completed, this project will not only bring some much-needed order and uniformity to the shelves at Mendel, but will also allow us to accept LC copy for books on composers and performers without modification.

To that end, as of Aug. 1, 2009, we will accept the LC-assigned class number for composers and performers in the ML410-ML429 range. Thus when cataloging a book or serial on an individual composer or performer without LC copy, it will be necessary to determine the class number that LC has assigned that composer/performer.  Please use the following interim procedure:

The following procedure should be followed to assign the proper ML410-ML429 number:

  1. Find the composer/performer’s authority record. If there is a class number in the 053 field (e.g., Elgar, Edward = ML410.E41), use it and cutter for main entry. If no 053 is present in the authority record, go to step 2.

  2. Search OCLC for an LC record about that composer/performer. Go to Cataloging/Search/WorldCat. Enter the name and use the index Personal Name. Limit by Source DLC. Use records for books, not sound recordings, scores, etc. Prefer more recent records. If this search yields no hits, go to step 3.

  3. Complete the cataloging for your book, leaving the “OK to export” box unchecked. Give the book to Brian Newhouse, who will provide a call number and export the record.
(Once the reclassification project is complete, this procedure will be revised to allow catalogers to formulate a class number in cases where no Library of Congress number is available; in the meantime, however, our shelflist will be an unreliable guide for the assignment of such numbers.)
