Searching the NAF

All headings being established must be searched in the NAF. The purpose of searching is not only to determine if a heading for your person or body already exists, but also to avoid possible conflicts or confusion.

A conflict can be between two headings, or between a heading and a reference.

If preliminary searching shows that your heading is not present in the NAF, but a similar (but not identical) heading or reference exists for a different entity, print it out to be attached later to the printout of your new record, with the indication "NOT SAME."

In the case of an identical heading or reference for a different entity, see the procedures for Conflict resolution.
