Metadata is currently being explored as a new form of cataloging and at this moment, experimental projects are being conducted around the world. Many disciplines are involved in this effort, especially those in visual materials, maps, and business.
The Metadata Workshop is designed to bring these developments and issues into focus for professional catalogers and to help them develop a better understanding of what metadata is and how it may be used as a tool to describe and provide access to digital objects and electronic resources.
The Metadata Workshop consists of four sequential parts, each of which must be completed before the next part can be understood.
Part I is a hands-on workshop which will review Windows and UNIX skills required for creating web pages (1 hour)
Part II is also a hands-on workshop in which the participant will learn basic HTML coding and will make a simple home page (2 hours)
Part III will explore the technical aspects of the Internet, the latest developments in Internet technology, and how this results in problems with Netscape and Explorer (2 hours)
Part IV will discuss metadata, what it is and how it is currently being used today. The workshop will feature an in-depth discussion of the most popular version of metadata for library use: the Dublin Core (4 hours)
