Recommendations:

Use separate subject tags for subelements. This will avoid repetition.

Use <genre> at the record level, not the subelement <genre> under subject.

Try to maintain a clear distinction between topics and genres. Many thesauri do this, but LCSH does not.

Use controlled vocabulary, identified in the authority attribute. We should try to avoid local subject terms if at all possible, but it may be unavoidable in some cases.
