Interim series treatment

In light of LC's recent change in series treatment, we are making some adjustments to our own series procedures. These changes are an interim step while we wait to see what the PCC's final plan is, and how seriously LC's change affects us. After a few months we will consider what additional changes might be necessary.

If you are a professional cataloger or a bibliographic specialist who does member copy cataloging, continue to treat series exactly as you have been doing unless you see a book with a goldenrod (yellow) flag in it marked "SPECIAL SERIES TREATMENT". If there is a flag, you must make sure that any series on the bibliographic record are traced and, if appropriate, classed as a set. If the series is in a 440 or 830, you will already be doing this, but you must also check for a series in a 490 0_ field and turn those into traced series as well.

Student workers and bibliographic specialists doing only LC copy will continue to follow their procedures in exactly the way they have been unless they see a book with a goldenrod (yellow) flag in it marked "SPECIAL SERIES TREATMENT". If there is a flag, pass the book along to the ACCT unit headed by Linda Turzynski.
