Exhibitions and Catalogs
Problems can arise when assigning subject headings for exhibitions of items produced in the Russian Empire, while the exhibition was held in the Soviet Union or Russia (Federation).
- According to SCM H1250, a heading is always assigned for the place where the items were produced. This may be formulated with a geographic subdivision or as an integral part of the heading.
- Add a heading for the place where the items are permanently held if all the items are from a single collection at the time of the exhibition.
- This may still involve the doubling of subject headings according to the Russia/Soviet Union/Former Soviet republics guidelines.
- To avoid this difficulty, Russia (Federation) may be used instead of Russia/Soviet Union if all the works were produced within the borders of the present Russian Federation.
- In case of doubt, use the heading for the larger place.
- When applicable, the heading Kievan Rus should be used.
