Princeton University Library MODS Documentation: Punctuation

General principal

Use International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) punctuation in MODS records. ISBD punctuation should be included in the record if it occurs within an element, but should be dropped between elements. Digital Library applications will generate the remaining ISBD punctuation.

There are two exceptions:

  1. In controlled access points whose authorized form ends in a full stop or other mark of punctuation, punctuation should be included (see examples below)
  2. In mods:note elements, punctuation should be included where it is grammatically or stylistically necessary. Use The Chicago Manual of Style for guidance.

It should also be noted that our practices break with ISBD conventions in two areas:

  1. A full stop will only be added to the end of fields where the stop is either part of a controlled heading or grammatically correct. In all other cases stops will be left off.
  2. Because parallel titles are reccorded in separate instances of mods:titleInfo and MODS does not supply a means for indicating a relationship between two titles, we will not use the "Title = Parallel title" construct.
