Supported Descendant Elements and Attributes

Use this sub-element to provide a display form for the date when needed to override the display provided by the encoded dates. For example, "15th century" is the desired display form, but the dates will be coded as earliest date=1401, latest date=1500.

[Required] The VRA schema enumerates several values for @type; "creation" is likely to be the most common.

[Required] Even if there is only a single date, it will be recorded in both earliestDate and latestDate. Dates are recorded in ISO-8601/W3CDTF format

In both cases, Sequences of 3-4 integers are assumed be valid dates; pairs of 3-4 integer sequences separated by a '-' are assumed to be a range. The presence of 'ca. ' and '?' in the string are also tested to help with attributes. DATE falls back to vra:display if a likely pattern cannot be matched.
