Using EndNote

Using EndNote with the PUL Main Catalog and selected databases

(If you are a first-time user, see this page for General EndNote Principles)

If you are at a public (or classroom) computer on campus, first map your "H: drive" so that you can save files and open them elsewhere later. Once you've done this, open up EndNote and create a new library by navigating to your H: drive directory and giving the default "Untitled.enl" your own name. Now you're ready to "populate" the library with records from:

Main Catalog

Using EndNote 9 with Voyager (the Library Catalog)

There is a Connection File and an Import Filter that can be used with Voyager. Use of the Import Filter is recommended: Connection files do not work with records containing diacritics and/or original scripts.

Obtaining the Import Filter

  1. The Voyager import filter does not come standard with EndNote.  You can download a Voyager import filter from: voyagerau.enf ( http://www.library.auckland.ac.nz/docs/Endnote/filters/VoyagerAU.enf ). EndNote must be closed when you download new import filters
  2. Save the voyagerau.enf file under the name VoyagerPU as an .enf file into the following folder: C:\Program Files\EndNote\Filters.

Displaying Downloaded Records using Unicode

  1. Open Edit>Preferences… , and click on Display Fonts
  2. Choose both for Library Display Font and General Display Font a full Unicode font, such as Arial Unicode MS .
  3. Click Apply and then OK.

Using the Import Filter

  1. Perform your Voyager search on http://catalog.princeton.edu
  2. Select the item (or items) that you would like to import into your EndNote library by checking the relevant check box(es).
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to the Print, Save, or Email Options section.
  4. From the Select Format dropdown menu select EndNote citation and click on the Display for Print/Save button.
  5. Your search results are redisplayed in an EndNote compatible format in a new window.
  6. From the browser select File > Save As… to save the search results ready for use with the Import Filter.  You can save your search results anywhere but you must select Text File (.txt) under “Save as type”, and Unicode (UTF-8) as “Encoding”.
  7. To import your search results into EndNote 9 using the VoyagerPU Import Filter open EndNote 9 and open the library into which you want to import your references.
  8. Click on File > Import
  9. Click Choose File... to locate and open the file you saved from Voyager (steps above).
  10. Double-click on your file name, or highlight it and click on the Open button; the file name will be pasted into the box
  11. Click on the Import Option button
  12. Click on Other Filters.... from the Import Option list. In the “Choose an Import Filter” window scroll through the list of available filters select VoyagerPU
  13. Select Discard Duplicates from the Duplicates list if you want that. (A reference is considered a duplicate if the Author, Year, Title, and Reference Type match a reference already in the library.)
  14. Select Unicode (UTF-8) from the Text Translation list
  15. Click on the Import button to import the file of saved references from Voyager into your EndNote library.
