Primary sources for historical research: medieval and early modern Europe

This guide lists important collections of primary sources on Europe before 1800 held by the Princeton University Library. It covers microform, print and digital collections. Microforms listed in this guide are housed in Firestone Library Microforms Service on C floor. Printed guides to these collections are usually also housed in Microforms Service and have call numbers beginning "FilmB." A few collections held by Princeton Theological Seminary or by the Center for Research Libraries are also listed in this guide. Medieval manuscripts and early printed books

This film set reproduces lists and inventories of Latin manuscripts from more than 100 libraries, primarily in Europe. While many of these lists have probably been superseded by online cataloging and finding aids, the scholar in search of the holdings of a particular library may find these helpful.
Manuscripta: Microfilms of rare and out-of-print books

Material originally from the Vatican Library, but filmed for the Vatican microfilm collection at Pius XII Memorial Library, St. Louis University. Despite the title of the collection, it reproduces printed books, not manuscripts. Arranged more or less topically; consult the lists in the binder for related books. Note: there are records in the Main Catalog for some, but not all, of the items in the collection.
Incunabula [microform]: the printing revolution in Europe, 1455-1500

Very large collection of microfiche editions of incunables. Arranged variously: by topic (e.g. medical, romances), geographical (printing in England, printing in Venice), and by language (printing in Greek, printing in French.) Digital edition of books from the Bibliothèque Nationale; the intent was to create "une bibliothèque patrimoniale et encyclopédique." Covers the Middle Ages through the 19th century. Most material is in French. "Cette collection rassemble des éditions prestigieuses, dictionnaires et périodiques. Elle concerne de nombreuses disciplines telles l'histoire, la littérature, les sciences, la philosophie, le droit, l'économie ou les sciences politiques."

Microfilm of a collection of approximately 16,000 pamphlets held in the New York Public Library. "It offers a wealth of information on the legislative and administrative history of France, as well as other aspects of French life. Dealing with the financial and political administration of France proper from the late 13th century to the end of the monarchy, nearly three-quarters of the pamphlets here are concentrated in the 18th century; a considerable number are of earlier origin. Many of the early pamphlets are reprints of materials published by officials during the period of the monarchy as a reminder of the established rights or obligations of their constituency."

Making of the Modern World Digital Archive
Digital edition of the Goldsmiths'-Kress collections of books on that document economic and business activity in the West, from 1450 to 1850. Materials include books, pamphlets and ephemera and cover a broad range of topics in political science, history, sociology, and banking, finance, transportation and manufacturing. French Revolutionary pamphlets [microform]

This collection was published in the early 1960's by Falls City Microcards and sold by Microcard Editions, Inc. The microcard collection was based primarily on the Talleyrand Collection at the New York Public Library (see "Printed guide" above) and the Melvin Collection at the University of Kansas. There are records in the Main Catalog for about 2,000 items in this collection, and a title list on the microfiche at the beginning of the microcard set.
French Revolution collections in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections
"The Library has a great quantity of material on the French Revolution. The most effective access to holdings is provided by the following publication: Pamphlets, Periodicals, and Songs of the French Revolutionary Era in the Princeton University Library: A Descriptive Catalogue together with Indexes compiled by Carla Hesse and Laura Mason with the assistance of Stephen Ferguson. (New York and Princeton, 1989) [(ExB) Z2178 .P76]. This short-title catalogue lists the Library's 3000+ pamphlets from the French Revolutionary period." The component collections include Bord, Weaver, Chinard, and Rogers.

"This collection of Gneisenau’s private and official papers consists, in general, of letters and reports sent and received, manuscript and printed copies of Cabinet orders, tables of disposition of troops of the Prussian and other armies, military and political studies and memoranda prepared by or submitted to Gneisenau, muster rolls and other records of units of the Prussian Army, and directives and circular letters issued by the Prussian Ministry of War. The papers concern such topics as the defense of Kolberg; the campaigns of 1813, 1814, and 1815; negotiations with French Government, 1814 and 1815; and the administration, organization, training, and equipment of the Prussian Army"
