The Princeton University Library, in the vanguard of the world's best research libraries, is heavily used by a population of 6,400 students and 1,100 faculty members. The general collection includes 6 million printed volumes that meet the diverse needs of the academic community. Its holdings range from ancient papyrus and incunabula to the most advanced electronic databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. Description: The Cotsen Children’s Library is a unit of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. It houses an important historical collection of illustrated children's books and related items. The primary responsibility of the Cataloger will be to catalog pre-20th century printed monographs according to national standards, as modified by the specifications of a book catalog. Some cataloging of other formats such as graphic materials and printed music will be required as well. As a member of the project team the Cataloger will provide both original and complex copy cataloging along with extensive edits of existing records. Work on the 14,000 titles to be included in the final volumes of the book catalog must be completed in 3 years, so it is essential that all team members sustain production work at a high level of quality. The Cataloger may be assigned to supervise students or temporary staff. This is a challenging position for a professional who seeks to apply advanced skills in a unique environment. The Cataloger will work closely with both the curator of the Cotsen Children’s Library and the Department’s head of technical services.

Qualifications
Required:
MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent combination of education and professional experience. Recent experience as an original cataloger in an academic/research environment. Demonstrated familiarity with relevant cataloging tools and standards including AACR2r, LCRIs, LCSH, MARC, RLIN, OCLC, and bibliographic reference sources. Ability to synthesize information from different sources and reach sound bibliographic decisions. Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Strong project management skills. Strong reading knowledge of German, Latin or French.

Preferred : Cataloging experience with the Voyager integrated library system. Experience in cataloging and physical management of rare books. Knowledge of authority work, including participation in NACO. Bibliographic familiarity with additional languages included in the collection. Background in historical bibliography and the history of book production, especially of illustration and the major processes of reproduction highly desirable. Knowledge of children’s literature. Experience in training and supervision. Facility with Microsoft Access.
