Education and Outreach Program Coordinator

The Princeton University Library, in the vanguard of the world's best research libraries, is heavily used by a population of 6,400 students and 1,100 faculty members. The general collection includes 6 million printed volumes that meet the diverse needs of the academic community. Its holdings range from ancient papyrus and incunabula to the most advanced electronic databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. The Program Coordinator directs the Cotsen Children’s Library’s public education activity and manages the Cotsen gallery, including maintenance of the installation and program areas. (ccl.princeton.edu)

The Coordinator reports to the Curator of the CCL and works closely with the Curator to set program priorities and develop programs that interpret the research collection for school groups and members of the community.

The Coordinator works collaboratively to sponsor programs with other campus and community groups, and also oversees, under the direction of the Curator, the development, delivery and promotion of education programs and the development and delivery of programming by Princeton University students.

The Coordinator manages the budget for programming subject to the Curator’s approval.

SPECIFICALLY THE COORDINATOR’S TASKS INCLUDE:

Program Development

  • Designing programs that promote public understanding of and appreciation for the value of special collections such as the Cotsen Children’s Library while maintaining departmental procedures for security and restricted access to rare and fragile items.
  • Developing school visitation programs and curricula that support K-12 curriculum standards.
  • Providing professional development programs for local educators that encourage innovation in the teaching of literature for K-12.

Recruitment

  • Recruiting, training and mentoring Princeton University student volunteers interested in developing and delivering literacy outreach programs for the campus or local community.
  • Hiring and supervising employees and student volunteers to assist in coordinating activities and updating the web page.
  • Identifying and contracting artists and educators to present programs in the Cotsen gallery.

Communications and Publications

  • Generating print publicity for Cotsen gallery and education programs, including brochures, press releases, and publication of a quarterly newsletter.
  • Maintaining the program area of the Cotsen web page.
  • Responding to numerous inquiries and messages from staff, students, and community via email.

Qualifications

Required

  • MLS, or undergraduate degree in arts and humanities combined with K-12 teaching or outreach experience.
  • Minimum of three years relevant and successful experience in a school, library, museum or other cultural institution delivering K-12 level education and outreach programs .
  • Project management and supervisory experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact and work closely with young people.
  • Extensive knowledge of children’s literature, classic and contemporary, across genres.
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access or other database).
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours for programs and meetings.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of publishing software and experience in web page content management.
  • Knowledge or experience in the fine and performing arts.
  • Reading knowledge and conversational ability in at least one other language.
  • Experience with volunteers, including undergraduate students and community groups.

Benefits: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid holidays.
