Library Hourly Positions

Starting on Monday, April 4, 2005 applications for Library support staff positions and hourly positions will be accepted online only from the Jobs at Princeton website.

Note for candidates already employed by the Library: All internal candidates applying for a Library vacancy must submit a resume.  A resume template in Word format is available online.   Internal candidates are invited to contact the Library Human Resources Office to schedule an individual consultation on writing a resume and preparing for an interview. Such consultations can be particularly helpful if the candidate has not applied for a position within the last eighteen months.

Assists in shelving and stack maintenance of Marquand Art and Archaeology Library


Work includes shelving, shelf-reading, and shelf-dressing, as well as oversight of items charged to Marquand reading room shelves, 109 study carrels, and 75+ visiting scholar shelves. Also includes the regular collecting of books throughout the building.  The incumbent will also be responsible for recording statistics of daily work and searching for missing items. 

Qualifications: The applicant should be able to work well independently and with others.  Attention to detail and accuracy are a must.  The incumbent should have an excellent command of English and the ability to master Library of Congress and Richardson call number sequences.  Preference will be given to applicants who have prior knowledge of library classification systems and experience with the Voyager integrated library system (Circulation functions, in particular). 

The successful candidate must pass a brief Library of Congress Classification training exam taken on the computer, and be able to lift and shelve heavy art books throughout the day.  He/she must also be able to carefully maneuver book trucks in and out of elevators and throughout library stacks with minimal effort.


$15.13 hourly rate, no benefits.

The successful candidate will be required to pass the Post-Offer Pre-Employment Screening (POPES) Physical Examination.

ReCAP (The Research Collections and Preservation Consortium Library)
    
The Research Collections & Preservation Consortium (RECAP) is a partnership of Columbia University, Princeton University and The New York Public Library formed to jointly operate a high density book shelving facility on the Plainsboro, NJ campus of Princeton University to address the continuously expanding collection needs of the three institutions and provide for prompt high quality service to their remotely stored collections.  The facility encompasses four shelving modules, with current accessions of more 5.8 million items; a 25,000 square foot processing center; and cold storage film vault.   A courier service provides next business day delivery of requested items from the facility. Alternative delivery options include electronic document delivery, interlibrary loan and Borrow Direct.  The facility offers a reading room for on site consultation.
 
The Library Office Assistant II will rotate daily among the various tasks listed below: unpacking material from truck, sort material by size and place in appropriate sized trays, assemble and label trays, check in refiles, other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:  Must be able work 7:45 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday.  High School Diploma with 1-2 years of related work experience.   Experience that demonstrates good communication skills, good organizational skills and excellent interpersonal relations skills.  Ability to work in a fast paced environment, extreme accuracy is important and be able to spot inconsistencies.  Accurate keyboarding skills.  Ability to work independently, in small groups, and or team environments, with rotating tasks.  General knowledge of basic computer operation.  References must indicate excellent attendance and punctuality.  Physically fit, ability to lift heavy loads of 50lbs regularly, 80lbs on occasion; roll book trucks on a variety of surfaces, and operate a pallet jack and hand truck.  Perform duties as assigned, a schedule that might rotate to accommodate work demands.
