Sr. Bibliographic Specialist II - Requisition # 0800213

Cataloging and Metadata Services, MELT Approvals Section

The Library seeks an energetic, production-oriented person to process approval plan receipts in Turkish.  Using the Library’s online system, the successful candidate will search the catalog, the main bibliographic utility (OCLC), download and create catalog records, create holdings and item records, create online purchase orders, and catalog books with LC/PCC and non LC/PCC catalog records as well as selected original cataloging and create name authority records for modern Turkish personal names for the national authority file.

Required:  In-depth knowledge of Turkish, ability to search and interpret catalog records and understand their relationships, and the ability to edit online records accurately.  Computer skills are essential to perform this job.  In addition to basic Windows skills (copy/paste, switching between windows, using alternate keys, etc.), the job requires logging into, searching, and manipulating data in several different systems.  Ability to do sustained detail work at a computer workstation and operate a system with a graphical user interface requiring use of a mouse.  Ability to use a barcode scanner.  Must be able to move books from shelf to book truck and vice versa.  Reliability and the ability to work constructively with coworkers are essential.  Good working knowledge of other Near Eastern languages or Slavic languages is desired.

Bibliographic Specialist – Requisition # 0800278
Full Time Position - Level 3
Monograph Acquisitions Unit, Order Division
Two Positions available.

This position is responsible for the processing monographic order requests sent to the Order Division and for the treatment of ordered materials upon receipt.  Using the Library’s integrated system, the incumbent performs the entire range of acquisition tasks that include preorder searching, placing of orders, monitoring of unfilled orders, problem solving, opening of new receipts, receiving, sorting, and charging of newly acquired materials.  The applicant will also be responsible for cataloging books that have LC copy at time of receipt.  In addition to these Unit duties, the individual in this position will be trained to perform basic processing tasks, including serial check-in and invoice processing that will enable the incumbent to provide support to other units in the Department when needed.

RequirementsCandidate must meet the following qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent library experience; Demonstrated record of searching, interpreting, creating, importing, and/or editing bibliographic records in local and remote databases;  Recent experience working in a Windows-based environment, including competency with keyboard and basic mouse skills, proven knowledge of email, Microsoft Office applications, and competency in electronic file management are all required for this position; Excellent internet searching and navigating skill is essential;  Excellent reading knowledge of at least one modern European language in addition to English is required; Proven ability to work accurately and quickly with detailed information, and demonstrated skill to clearly communicate such information, both orally and in writing, are requirements;  Strong organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities, capability of performing several tasks simultaneously, while sustaining a high level of productivity, are all essential;  Physically, individual must be able to do sustained detailed work at a computer for most of the day and be able to move and shelve books or other library material;  In addition, the applicant must be able to work co-operatively and effectively with a diverse group of internal staff as well as with external contacts.

PreferencesA comprehensive understanding of technical services in an academic library environment, especially the acquisition to cataloging process, is highly desirable.  Preference will be given to individuals with prior library experience, familiarity with Voyager or other online integrated library systems, additional language skills, bookstore or publishing industry experience, and advanced level searching and bibliographic skills.

Special Collection Assistant V – Assistant to the Curator of Rare Books

Rare Books

This position may work evenings or weekend hours from time to time.

The Assistant to the Curator of Rare Books is the key agent aiding the Curator in the daily work of the Division.  This work falls into three areas:  Collection-related, Services to readers and Special Projects.   The incumbent will assist the Curator with the execution of his professional responsibilities and the work of the Rare Books Division within the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Particular tasks include but are not limited to:

  1. Use of Voyager cataloguing and acquisitions modules, MS Word, MS Excel, Web tools and other such like software tools, so that the incumbent can perform all various collection-related duties related to the intake, accessioning, cataloguing, maintenance, as well as storage and physical retrieval of the many thousands of items making up the collections of rare books and other historic materials making up the general holdings of the Division. 
  2. Use of such like tools and other skills in the performance of tasks related to services to readers
  3. Use of such like tools and other skills in performance of tasks related to special projects such as exhibitions, publications, presentations to special groups, etc.
  4. The incumbent must hire, train, and supervise student workers

Requirements: 

  • Experience with handling rare materials in a university library, rare book, or historic collections library setting
  • Office software skills such as email, Web browsers, Windows, MS Office, especially Word, Excel and Access
  • Understanding of both standard cataloging principles and practices
  • Knowledge of Voyager Cataloging modules
  • Knowledge of online catalog, bibliographic databases, Internet resources, and searching strategies for location and verification of catalog copy
  • Ability to organize, plan, and assign work.
  • Ability to work in conditions where dust and mold are encountered
  • Ability to move and shelve books
  • Ability to gather data and communicate effectively and regularly with both technical services and curatorial staff.
  • Ability to sustain detailed work at a computer and use a barcode scanner.
  • Able to be flexible, versatile, and independent, yet cooperative.
  • Able to be proactive, service-oriented, and responsive to clientele needs.
  • Able to work occasional weekend and evening hours.
  • Reading skill in a European language.
  • Able to handle collections, including ability to lift 30 lbs.

Preferred: Long-term experience using the supporting computer and Internet tools for cataloging and searching is preferred.  Bachelor’s degree in English, History, or a modern foreign language is preferred.  College level work in a modern European language is preferred. Experience supervising student workers is preferred.
