Student Employment in the Library

Sample job descriptions

The positions described are just samples. It is understood that many student positions will have duties from more than one of these categories. A range of pay scales accommodates differences in the experience levels of students and the complexity of the tasks performed.

Circulation Desk tasks
Pay scale: C or D level
Description: Charge/discharge/renew items, clear book drop, perform security checks, interpret circulation or patron records, manage hold shelf, answer directional questions, accept fines. Reserve desk duties including processing items for reserves.

Physical tasks
Pay scale: C or D level
Pack/unpack boxes, participate in stack shifts

Stack maintenance
Pay scale: C or D level
Description: Shelve books/microforms/recordings. Retrieve items from stacks, trace books, shelfread stacks, participate in large book shifts.

Clerical tasks
Pay scale: D or E level
Description: File documents/catalog cards/shelflist cards, fold and mail circ notices, photocopy. Process new books and serials, including book plates and labels, writing call numbers, shelving. Process new microforms. Maintain newspaper or periodical collection, including shelving, weeding, labeling, preparation for binding. Make temporary bindings Maintain supplies, proofread, and other non-computer clerical tasks.

User services
Pay scale: Pay scale: D or E level
Description: Reception desk duties , including answering directional questions and answering telephones. Help users with OPAC, Library Web site, microform readers, photocopiers. Answer basic reference questions for a collection.

Research or writing tasks
Pay scale: E level or F level
Description: Bibliographic searching for finding aids, authority control, etc. Write inventories, finding aids, series descriptions. Design content for Web sites.

Technical tasks
Pay scale: E or F level
Description: Maintain computers and photocopiers, including cleaning, adding paper, fixing paper jams, reimaging and troubleshooting. Search records in large online databases. Create or update records in Library catalog. Create or maintain Web pages. Input data to spreadsheets or databases. Process e-reserves. Annexing projects, Scanning projects, other projects using MS software applications.

Working with special materials
Pay scale: E level or F level
Description: Handle maps, including processing, cataloging, repairing, shelving. Handle manuscripts or ephemera collections, including basic appraisal, sorting, organizing, filing. Process dissertations, depository collections, or rare materials.

Student manager
Pay scale: (see student employment manual for current pay)
Description: Supervise students. Hire or evaluate students, train students, delegate tasks, review students’ work. Open/close Library, manage library or collection on weekends/evenings, cover hours for no-shows and emergencies. Serve as liaison with librarian.

Coordinator of students
Pay scale: (see student employment manual for current pay)
Description: Supervise student managers and fill in for student managers as necessary. Coordinate student training, oversee student payroll, delegate tasks, serve as liaison with librarian.
