Library Excellence Toolkit
a staff learning and development program

The Library Excellence Toolkit is a curriculum of classes offered to staff to help develop and enhance skills needed in the changing Library workplace. Throughout the series, the themes of open communication, respect, leadership, collaboration, and diversity are emphasized and reinforced, to create a culture of collegiality.

Classes are open to all librarians, technical staff, administrative staff, and support staff. Some classes are of particular interest to supervisors and staff in leadership roles. Wide scale attendance will ensure a shared understanding of the concepts of good management and library professionalism.

Individual Learning and Development Plan

Participants will use an Individual Learning and Development Plan to help assess the current state of their skills/competencies/behaviors, consider their goals, and develop a plan for attaining those goals. The Plan is based on the 70-20-10 learning and development formula, which estimates that 70% of our workplace learning and development takes place in on-the-job experiences, 20% comes from observation and feedback, and 10% comes from formal training experiences.

It is recommended that participants share the Individual Learning and Development Plan with their supervisor or Department Head in two ways:

  1. Before registering for a class - to assess which classes are appropriate and relevant and for the participant's needs.
  2. After attending a class - to reinforce the learning commitment and to receive coaching in applying the skills learned.

Resources for participants

A comprehensive BlackBoard site has been set up with articles, websites, and bibliographies which supplement the learning in the classes. The online class on Managing Meetings is also available from the site. All professional staff have been enrolled as participants in the Blackboard site, and support staff can be added upon request to Luisa Paster. To access the site from the Blackboard welcome page, log on with your NetId and LDAP password, then select Library Management Development under Organizations.

The Learning & Development Office of University Human Resources has also developed a broad Core Learning Curriculum for university staff focusing on management and communication skills. Library staff are welcome to attend all classes and to register for a Princeton University Management Development Certificate. You will note that a few of the classes are offered both by HR and the Library. Library staff are welcome to attend these classes either in the Library venue with Library colleagues or in the wider University setting.
