LETC Seminars: Research Tools for the Humanities

Program Description:

This session will look at freely available tools useful in organizing and collecting materials used in research. The first tool, Mendeley, is a desktop application that helps to organize PDF documents. In the course of collecting research materials, researchers often end up with a large collection of PDF documents. Mendeley acts as a kind of iTunes for scholarly publications. The software scans files on your computer, extracting information such as author and title automatically from PDF files. After building a library, the files can be categorized, tagged and searched.

In the final part of the presentation, we'll look at ways to discover new information on the web that may be of interest to your research. Use RSS feeds from scholarly journals and other information sources to keep track of what is going on in your field and what people are writing about. Learn ways to combat information overload and to filter the news for the topics that you are interested in using Google Reader and Yahoo Pipes.
