Library DirectionsThe introductory paragraph of Princeton's Rights, Rules and Responsibilities states that "The central purposes of a University are the pursuit of truth, the discovery of new knowledge through scholarship and research, the teaching and general development of students, and the transmission of knowledge and learning to society at large. Free inquiry and free expression within the academic community are indispensable to the achievement of these goals. The freedom to teach and to learn depends upon the creation of appropriate conditions and opportunities on the campus as a whole as well as in classrooms and lecture halls. All members of the academic community share the responsibility for securing and sustaining the general conditions conducive to this freedom."The Library makes a vital contribution to the University's mission by providing both source and secondary materials, and by promoting and sustaining learning and research opportunities. Our critical library functions are to provide the infrastructure for scholarship by building appropriate collections, by making them easily available, and by assisting members of the Princeton community and scholars from around the world to use them. As a special focus for this year, the Library will concentrate on four areas:
