10. Hans-Friedrich Geist.
Pre-cinematic optical toys are the subject of the thirty-fourth
plate of this charmingly illustrated taxonomy of toys. Any of these
objects, which were drawn from actual nineteenth century examples,
could be found in people's homes. Number 6 in the upper left-hand
corner is a particularly splendid example of a magic lantern. The other
devices are 1) peepshow, 2) camera obscura, 3) zoetrope, 4) stereopticon
slide viewer, and 5) kaleidoscope, with materials for making slides.
