3. Marie Colmont. Panorama du fleuve [Panorama of a River]. Illustrated by Alexandra Exter. Paris: Flammarion, c1937.
3a. The panorama’s first double-page spread.
Alexandra Exter was an avant-garde painter and famous designer for the theater. The Panorama du fleuve–nearly six feet long when opened out–is considered to be a masterpiece of twentieth-century children's book illustration, but it is usually overlooked by art historians. Her three panoramas were quickly published in English translation, but reformatted as conventional large picture books, instead of accordion-folded strips with text on one side and illustrations on the other.
