Introduction and Scope:
The Thomas Walker Microfilm Collection consists of 187 reels containing reproductions of music sources from the 17th through the 20th century. Of particular significance are the collections of materials related to 17th century Venetian opera, 18th century opera seria, and the Danish composer Carl Nielsen.
Background:
Tom Walker came to the Faculty of Princeton University in 1988, first as a Visiting Professor then from 1989 until his death in 1995 serving as Professor of Music. Prior to this he served as Professor and Dean of the Arts Faculty and Director of the Institute of the History of the Arts at the University of Ferrara from 1982-1988. He also worked as a staff editor of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, a lecturer at King's College London, and at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Harvard University, and studied at the University of California, Berkeley from 1963-1968. His scholarly interests were far reaching, covering music from the 13th to the 20th century, focusing particularly on 17th century Italian opera, 18th century opera seria, and the music of Carl Nielsen. It is these three areas that serve as the core of the microfilm collection in the Mendel Music Library and described here. For further biographical information see the Memorial Resolution passed by the Faculty of Princeton University.

Notes: Pagination in the sources is often done sloppily. In this list the number given to the last page in a sequence is provided, but often the total arrived at in this way combines, skips, repeats, or inserts pages, and sometimes the pages are presented or preserved out of order. In addition, in preparing the microfilm, certain pages or pairs of pages are photographed twice or even three times in succession. Page numbers given in quotation marks mean that the compiler has noted some serious irregularities in pagination in that manuscript.
Unless designated with the word "printed," these scores are all handwritten. Many are in Nielsen's hand, but others were prepared by a copyist (sometimes with further emendations by Nielsen written over them). "Sketch" generally refers to something incomplete; "draft" implies a rough but complete manuscript that preserves continuity; a clean copy is called "ms." Since this list was compiled quickly by someone not previously familiar with Nielsen manuscripts and whose methods were in flux as the job went along, these distinctions must not be taken as definitive or iron-clad. "Parts" refer to performing materials for orchestral, chamber, or choral music; occasionally these may be "printed" but most are handwritten.
Each line begins with a number assigned to the work in question in the Fog and Schousboe catalogue; these are also used in the New Grove 2 worklist so that works may be matched easily. Extremely well-known works may sometimes omit these numbers; if less familiar works lack such numbers it's because the compiler of the list could not recognize where that work fits in the New Grove 2 worklist. The title of the work is often given as in the New Grove 2 worklist even if the title page designation is worded somewhat differently. PLEASE NOTE that the compiler of this list has no competency in Danish or in reading Danish script, and so many transcriptions of words not found in the New Grove 2 worklist may be wildly incorrect.
If a line "_____________________" appears after a title, it indicates that there is a blank space between the work before and after it AND that the library information appears before and/or after that blank space. A line in parentheses means that there is a significant blank space between adjacent manuscripts but that no library information is included.
The computer on which this list was compiled did not permit the use of umlauts, slashed O's, and other accents.
Please note again that this is a rough list to provide a general idea of the contents of these reels, not a careful work of scholarship! The compiler hopes that it adequately fulfills its modest aims and that it will be useful as a starting point for anyone who has occasion to use these microfilms.
