Mendel Music Library: Online Audio Reserves

Student Information

The purpose of Electronic Course Reserves is to make reserve materials available 24 hours, 7 days a week and also to expand the kinds of materials instructors can currently place on reserve.

Users may listen to music examples which instructors wish to make available to students. The current system includes sound files from CDs required by listening assignments. These CDs may also still be checked out at the Mendel Music Library Reserve Desk.

We hope that students will find this a time saver and a more complete resource than the traditional reserve desk. Also, feel free to give us feedback.

  1. How do I find material my instructor has put on Online Audio Reserves?
  2. Why do I need a userid and password?
  3. What kind of hardware/software will I need to view Online Audio Reserve material?
  4. How do I retrieve sound files in Online Audio Reserves?
  5. How can I find out details about the performers of music examples?
  6. Who do I contact with questions?

How do I access Online Audio Reserves?

You need a Userid and Password. We gave as the userID the name of the course as it is in the Music Reserve Database, e.g., mus103. The professor will create or be given the password.

Who can access Online Audio Reserves?

Online Audio Reserves will be available to all students officially enrolled in a class that is participating in this pilot project. The professor created or has been given a userID and password for each music course that will have sound files on Online Audio Reserves. The professor is the ONLY person who can give students this information. Once you have a userID and password be aware that these are "case sensitive" so you must enter them exactly as they are given to you.

If you need any other assistance, please call Mendel Music Library Reserve Desk at (609) 258-8982 or write to Dan Gallagher <dpg@princeton.edu>.

Why do I need a userid and password?

All sound files are restricted to protect the copyright holder and require the use of a userID and password to access them. The materials are to be used for course purpose only and the person using these materials assumes liability for any infringements of copyright law.

What kind of hardware/software will I need to view the Online Audio Reserves material?

To hear Online Audio Reserve sound files, you will need:

  1. A Windows PC or a Macintosh
  2. Internet Explorer, Netscape or other World Wide Web client. Netscape is available (for students, faculty, and staff) through Princeton's Computing and Information Technology.
  3. A copy of RealPlayer for Windows or Macintosh. This plug-in is already installed on some computers at the public computing sites maintained by CITand/or the public workstations within the Library system.

If you are working on a computer which does not have the RealPlayer installed and want to access these listenings from your home, you will need to install the RealPlayer on your computer. The RealPlayer software can be downloaded from the web at no charge. You will then need to install the RealPlayer 8 Basic as a plug-in on your own web browser. URL: http://www.realplayer.com.

How do I retrieve sound files in Online Audio Reserves?

At the Online Audio Reserve Authenication page, enter the userid and password your professor has given you. A copyright notice will appear, you must accept the responsibilities stated before the course listing will be displayed. A list of the sound files that are available electronically for that particular course will display. Click on a track title to retrieve the file.

Understanding Copyright Fair Use Principles:

Your course listenings are copyrighted materials. These materials are identified with a copyright notice. As a listener of these documents, you are encouraged to comply with fair use.

Fair Use guidelines suggest the following:

Any copy that is made should preserve the author's name, the title of the document, and a statement of copyright, if there is one.

You must not use any of these documents to mislead others about the views or competence of the author, nor as part of a commercial product.

How do I find information about the performers of music examples?

Every sound file retains a CD number and a track number (e.g., "CD-101, track 3" is "cd-101_3.rm"), which appears as the file name at the bottom of Online Audio Reserves list page. You can find out the names of performers if you search by call number (e.g., CD-number) in the Main Online Catalog or ask for that CD at the Mendel Music Library Reserve Desk.

Who do I contact with questions?

If you have questions about the listening assignments, contact the professor or instructor for the course.

If you have problems accessing the page, printing the list, or listening the sound files, contact dpg@princeton.edu.
