MISSION

The Reserve Department encourages faculty, departmental staff, and students to use its services to ensure the availability of required course readings and broaden study through supplemental material.

Only material intended for instructional use in a registered course or for the completion of departmental requirements may be placed on reserve by the instructor or by an authorized delegate.

Books are the principal form of “traditional” reserve material, while e-reserves may include book chapters; articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers; and audio-visual material in various formats.

Please note that video recordings designated for course reserve will be housed in the Language Resource Center, but can be digitized for access on demand via the Princeton Blackboard course management website.

Examination questions and answers, sample papers, and problem sets cannot be placed on reserve due to their sensitive nature.

HOW TO SUBMIT REQUESTS

The Online Reserve Request Service (ORRS) is the official medium through which faculty members and instructors are asked to submit requests for reserve material in all formats.

This database associates stored articles with specific courses and instructors across semesters. After its initial submission, a list of related materials can readily be updated and approved online.

In order to expedite and guarantee the processing of your requests, please complete and review your ORRS list in advance of the start of classes, providing accurate and complete bibliographic information.

If you have any questions about the online service, Reserve staff can be contacted by telephone, email, or by appointment. To request a department-specific ORRS UserID/Password combination, or to arrange for training, please contact Alexander Brown at ab@princeton.EDU.

ELECTRONIC RESERVES (E-Reserves)

Using the Electronic Course Reserve Service, registered students can view, download, and print reserve readings from Princeton University libraries and other campus locations, from residence halls, or from home, at any time.

Students will have access to E-Reserve readings via Blackboard, which delivers e-reserves, class schedules, syllabi, announcements, and other information for courses in which the student is enrolled by means of the student’s own user ID and password.

Another means of access is the E-Reserve homepage. At this site, students will need a course-specific ID/password combination as supplied by the instructor. For more information, please contact the Reserve Department at reserve@princeton.EDU or call 609-258-3224.

PURCHASE ORDERS

The Reserve Department maintains a fund for the purchase of books and audio-visual materials to be used for course reserves only. Purchase requests for other purposes should be made by visiting: http://library.princeton.edu/services/purchase.php

Please remember that some items may require 6-8 weeks to be acquired depending on availability, vendor’s policies, and shipping details. The need for new titles, or for additional copies, should be brought to the attention of the Reserve staff well before the start of classes.

When requesting reserve items, please indicate author’s name, title, ISBN number, and publisher, and specify which edition is needed. The Reserve Department will promptly report any problems, such as out-of-stock or out-of-print status.

COPYRIGHT

Materials available through the E-Reserves system are password-protected and are to be used only by students enrolled in the associated course. These readings must not be copied or distributed for any purpose prohibited by copyright law.

For further information regarding the scope and nature of copyright protection and the limits of the “fair use” exemption, please consult Copyright Basics, a website prepared by the Office of General Counsel.

Failure to use e-reserves as specified may violate the University’s copyright policy and result in the loss of access privileges.

Please contact the Reserve if at anytime you have questions or a problem. We are committed to serving your library needs.
