She has a Master of Library Science with a specialization in rare books and a Ph.D. in English. Her research focuses on the literary, visual, and material culture of childhood of the long 18th century. She co-edited "The Cambridge Companion to Children's Literature" and contributed to "The Oxford Companion to the Book" and "The Cambridge History of the Book in Britain."
