Meet Daniel Dias, Princeton University Library’s spring 2023 PACSCL Intern
Daniel Dias joined Princeton University Library (PUL) in Spring 2023 as its Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) intern. A junior at Rutgers University - New Brunswick, Dias is a history major who also works at Woodbridge Public Library as a novice archivist and local historian.

Meet Stephanie Martinez, 2023 ASAP Library and Archives Research Assistant

Teaching With Collections: Poetry and War
When poet René Char joined the French Resistance against Nazi occupation of France in WWII, he led sections of the maquis, rural guerrilla units, in Provence, and orchestrated dangerous parachute landings of arms and munitions — all the while continuing to write poetry. After the war, in 1946, Albert Camus first published Char’s “Feuillets d’Hypnos” (“Leaves of Hypnos”), a “notebook” of 237 prose poems reflecting on the conflict but also on humanity, nature, freedom and hope.

Now published: Ellen Ambrosone’s article on collaborative fieldwork
South Asian Studies Librarian Ellen Ambrosone, along with colleagues Laura A. Ring (University of Chicago Library) and Mara L. Thacker (International and Area Studies Library, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) traveled to four cities in India for a librarian acquisition trip. They authored an article on their travels and reflections on the ethics of creating and caring for collections, which was published by IFLA Journal in 2022 and recently printed in the March 2023 issue.

Uncovering the secrets of PUL items through spectral imaging
For a week in June 2022, Toth visited Princeton University Library (PUL) to dissect items from its collection via spectral imaging. Essentially, by photographing the items under various wavelengths of light, Toth can illuminate text and markings that were previously invisible to the naked eye.

How do you research an early 20th century female wreckage diver whose entire career is summarized in a couple sentences in the Chicago Tribune? Reference Professional for Special Collections Emma Sarconi and Gender and Sexuality Studies Librarian Sara Howard set out to answer that question through their project and Wintersession course, “An Archival Treasure Hunt in the Chicago Daily Tribune’s Varied Activities of Women Column.”

PUL computers updated to support more languages
Princeton University Library (PUL) updated the language bar on all of its public computers to support Chinese (Simplified – including an option to set this to Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic (including a Persian keyboard option), Hindi, Hebrew, and most recently, Greek.
