Database trial Manchurian Railways (Mantetsu) Database

Princeton, December 9, 2022.

The East Asian Library is running a trial of the Manchurian Railways (Mantetsu) Database.

The database includes three subsections:

1) The Mantetsu newspaper clippings of the 1920s-1940s originate from the collection in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and includes politics, diplomatic and military news.

2) The Mantetsu Documents 1906-1927 were made and classified according to subjects by the Investigation Department of the South Manchuria Railway Company, a Japanese intelligence agency which operated from 1906 to 1945, to investigate the military, political, economic, cultural and other intelligences in China. The data reproduced in the database originate from the collection of Maruzen Yushodo films in Japan.

3) The Mantetsu chōsa geppō 滿鐵調查月報 and its predecessor chosa jihō 調查 時報 from 1923-1934.
