As the 2020 U.S. Census concludes data collection in October, Princeton University Library highlights this relevant research guide on historical US census and vital records.

The guide provides access to U.S. census information from 1790 to 2010, including aggregated data reports and individual census records such as digitized collections of birth, marriage, and death records, records of military service, and probate records (wills and estates), up to 1940.  Also included in the guide is information about the foreign-born population of the United States from 1850-2000.

Questions? Contact Steve Knowlton, American History Librarian, for individual census records or Joann Donatiello, Population Research Librarian, for information about aggregated data.
