Princeton University Library Acquires Jacques Derrida's Personal Library
The Princeton University Library is very pleased to announce the acquisition of the vast personal working library of the famous—and famously controversial—philosopher, Jacques Derrida, whose ideas have profoundly influenced scholarship in many disciplines. His library of more than 13,000 books represents a lifetime of intensive reading, while the extensive annotations they contain reveal the ways in which he integrated what he read into his evolving philosophical structures and methodologies.

Scheide donates rare books library to Princeton
On February 16, 2015, the University announced that the The Scheide Library has been received as a legacy from William H. Scheide, Class of 1936. It has been housed in Firestone Library since 1959, when Scheide moved the collection from his hometown of Titusville, Pennsylvania. Bill Scheide added new acquisitions to the Library continuously down to his death in November 2014. For the past 56 years it has been available to scholars on terms comparable to the University’s other rare book collections and this will continue.

Versailles on Paper: A Graphic Panorama of the Palace and Gardens of Louis XIV
This exhibition documents the contemporary representation of Versailles through a multifaceted array of prints, books, maps, medals, and manuscripts. It highlights in particular those elements that today survive only on paper: ephemeral festivals; short-lived creatures (courtiers, animals, flowers); fragile groves and fountains too costly to maintain; and once celebrated masterpieces of art and architecture that were irrevocably destroyed or altered. The 'paper Versailles' is quite different from the one that millions of tourists visit every year and affords many unusual and surprising glimpses into a largely lost world. All the books and prints on display were created in the 17th and 18th centuries. With only a few exceptions, they were selected from the holdings of Firestone and Marquand Libraries, acquired over the past 140 years. A large number of these items came as gifts; therefore, this exhibition also honors the curators, alumni, and friends of the Princeton University Library who have built its remarkable collections. Please explore the exhibit's companion website.
