Faculty: Requesting Reserves What Can Be Placed On Reserve The Library can make individual book chapters, journal and newspaper articles, audio and video clips, etc., available for electronic reserve.E-books may also be requested if an entire work is needed.Sound recordings are available for reserves at Mendel Music Library. Mendel also offers digitization of various audio media formats, including CDs, LPs, DAT tapes, and cassettes for listening assignments upon request. Please contact Mendel Library directly.Items owned by other institutions or obtained via Interlibrary Loan or Borrow Direct cannot be placed on reserve. This includes items you may find through the Library catalog that reside in ReCAP as part of the shared collection. The URLs for these items will have SCSB in them. Best Practices Place your course reserve request as soon as possible, ideally at least one month before you need the material.Provide as much information as possible about the item you are requesting, including ISBN, ISSN, volume, issue, and page numbers, when applicable.If you have questions about course reserves, contact the branch affiliated with your discipline. If you are unsure of which branch that might be email [email protected]. Processing Status Once you have submitted your reserve items, they will display in a list within your Canvas course. You may check the processing status of items in your list at any time. The “item activation pending” status means that an item has been fully prepared for reserve, and will become available at the “start” of the semester. This date is set at least one week prior to the beginning of the semester. Student View If you would like to review how students will see your course reserves list in Canvas, select "Switch to Student Mode" once you are in the Library Course Reserves menu. Please note that students will only see available course reserve items shortly before the semester starts. Copyright Guidelines The Library complies with all applicable copyright laws. The following standards apply to the use of copyrighted works as electronic reserves: inclusion of materials on electronic reserve will be at the request of the instructor, or his or her designate, for educational purposes only; the Library must possess a lawfully obtained copy of any material requested for use as e-reserves; each e-reserves selection will include a citation of the source publication and a form of copyright notice; access to e-reserves will be terminated at the end of each semester following final examinations; Library reserves staff will investigate whether materials requested as e-reserves are available through an electronic database and will provide stable links to such readings when possible; the Library, with the advice of the Office of the General Counsel, will ascertain that the quantity of material requested for use as e-reserves from any source does not exceed current fair use guidelines and will seek permission from the rights holder for any request exceeding fair use; Library staff will remove materials available through the e-reserves service at the conclusion of each semester; Interlibrary loan and document delivery (Article Express) are for individual research purposes only. These services should not be used to obtain items for reserve, and items acquired by these services should not be redistributed, posted, or make available to others; The Library will not charge students for access to e-reserves materials. In each course they will be linked through the left menu item "Reserves."Physical ReservesPhysical course reserves are located at their home library. Use the catalog to locate the title and find the location. The loan period for most physical course reserve items is three hours of in-library use. Late returns are subject to fines. Course Reserve Tutorials Placing a Request Log into Canvas using your university login credentials. Select a course from the list of "Published Courses."Note: If you don’t see courses listed, you may need to contact your departmental PS CUP Administrator (PeopleSoft Course Update Process Administrator) so they may give you the appropriate access. Click on the "Reserves" link on the course site menu.If this is the first time you've used Reserves for this course, you will be prompted to choose a semester and click on "Create Course." At the top right of the following page, click on "Item Tools" and select "Add Items." A new page will open, with options for adding material to the course. You may select a form (article, chapter, book, file upload, audio, and video) to submit individual requests for items to be placed on reserve. Alternatively, you may import items used in previous courses and add them to your current course. Importing from a Previous Course To import items, navigate to the "Current and Previous Courses" list at the lower portion of the window and select the course with items you would like to import. On the next page, select the specific items you would like to re-use or clone. Finally, click the "Import Items" button at the bottom of the page. Editing or Deleting Reserve Items If an item has the status "Awaiting Reserves Processing," you can edit or delete it by clicking on the "Edit" link next to the item. If you wish to edit an item that is marked with a status other than "Awaiting Reserves Processing," you may need to contact reserves staff for assistance.
