Before You Visit
General travel information can be found on our Visit Us page. If you are planning a research visit to our special collections reading rooms, please continue reading to ensure you make the most of your time here.
Registration and Reading Room Access
The Department of Special Collections is open to the public. No appointment is necessary, but visiting researchers must register for a Special Collections Research Account in order to use our holdings. First time users can begin the registration process here.
In addition, non-Princeton visitors using either Firestone Library or the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library will be required to obtain an RBSC ID Card in the Access Office, located in the lobby of Firestone Library. There is no charge for the card, but it is a requirement for access to our reading rooms. Please bring a valid photo ID to finalize your registration in the Access Office.
Reading Room Hours and Policies
Fall/Spring Semesters: Monday to Friday, 9:00-4:45
Summer: Monday to Friday, 8:45 - 4:15

The Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library will be undergoing an extensive renovation that will begin in March 2020 and is expected to conclude in January 2021. Visit our website for the latest information on the availability of our collections during that time.
Requesting Materials and Access Restrictions
You may want to contact us with your needs in advance to make sure that we can make your trip worthwhile. For example, some materials need to be paged from our off-site storage facility (RECAP). These materials can take up to 48 hours to arrive, so you will want to request these ahead of time. Also, some collections are under embargo and, at the request of the donor, are not available to the public at the moment. For more on requesting material, see: Starting Your Research
