Charles duc de Berry

Translated Print Title:
[Charles, Duke of Berry]
Date(s):
ca. 1696

Louis XIV’s eldest son, Louis, the Grand Dauphin, had three sons with his wife, Maria Anna of Bavaria: Louis, duke of Burgundy; Philippe, duke of Anjou (who became king of Spain in 1700); and Charles, duke of Berry. The youngest is seen here around the age of 10. The long, curly wig and the floral embroidery on the tie and cuffs match the child’s cheerful and friendly character. In 1710 he married his cousin Marie-Louise-Elisabeth d’Orléans; none of their three children survived infancy. Charles himself died in 1714 as the result of a hunting accident at Marly.
