Situated at the southern end of the Hall of Mirrors, the Salon of Peace is adjacent to the Queen’s Bedchamber. The center of the ceiling depicts France (seated on a dove-drawn chariot and flanked by Glory and Abundance) offering peace to her enemies. It was in view of this triumphal decor that the Hall of Mirrors was chosen as the site for the signing of the peace treaties of 1871 and 1919.

Along with her sisters, the engraver Marie-Anne-Hyacinthe Horthemels was one of several women artists in a dynasty of booksellers and printmakers.
