The flood of texts and images glorifying Louis XIV and his achievements did not go unanswered. Especially in the second half of the reign, when the king’s military and religious policies became ever more aggressive and threatening, the rest of Europe responded by attacking his hegemonic claims and mocking his weaknesses. This case and the wall above offer a few samples created between 1691 and 1707.
