Adding the Piece (continued)

  • If there is one adding element (enum) it goes below and to the right of the call number.

    BR513
    .R46   2002

  • If there are two adding elements, the secondary element (chron) (written in parentheses) goes to the left of the primary element (enum).
    eg: (Chron) enum

    0692
    2665    (bind 40 ) 2000

    Z2663
    .L246    (2002) vol. 33

Remember Chron ALWAYS goes in parentheses when you write the call number and is written first.

Multiple years or volumes covered in one single volume are indicated by slashes in the volume and item records regardless as to how many pieces they represent. For example: book: vol. 1-3, on verso of title page, and in item record: vol. 1/3. (Means that there were 3 volumes in 1 physical volume.)

  • For booksets the volume designation goes underneath location and the call number:

    E302
    .A275
    1977
    vol. 10

  • After you’re done writing the call number on the book: if the book is hardbound, the serial will be placed on the "hardbound truck" in cataloging. Hardbound booksets are also placed on the same truck.

  • If the book is a softbound serial, you must write the holdings # in the gutter of the piece. If the book is a softbound serial, you bring it upstairs in plating and labeling supervisor/trainer show you where the shelf is).

  • If the book is a softbound bookset, you put the book on the "softbound" truck in cataloging.

  • Enter onto statistics sheet what you have checked in/ added.
