In October 2022, Princeton University Library (PUL) took a step towards promoting the study and appreciation of Indigenous cultures and histories by unveiling its Indigenous Studies Collection. The resource was born out of a vision to center Indigenous voices and perspectives.

Princeton University Library celebrates acquisition of Alma Concepción archive
Dozens of visitors from Princeton, Trenton, New York, Chicago, and other parts of the country came to Princeton University on Thursday, November 2 for “Dance, Literature and Comunidad,” a celebration of the life and of the opening of the archives of Puerto Rican dancer, educator, choreographer, and independent scholar Alma Concepción.

Princeton University Library advocates for reparative description for Indigenous collections through working group
In a move towards inclusivity and equity, Princeton University Library (PUL)’s Special Collections established the Indigenous Collections Working Group (ICWG) to conduct inclusive and reparative description work on archival and rare book collections that center around Indigenous communities in North America. Formed in 2021, this team is a subsidiary of the Special Collections Archival Description and Processing (ADAPT) Team's Inclusive Description Working Group.

Princeton University Library acquires the papers of Soviet poet and secretary to Anna Akhmatova Anatoly Naiman (1936-2022)
Along with Dmitrii Bobyshev, Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky, and Evgenii Rein, Anatoly Naiman was a member of the “Akhmatova orphans” circle, a group of four poets whom the Silver-Age poet Anna Akhmatova called her “magic choir.” Naiman would also become Akhmatova’s secretary in her later years. In addition to drafts of his own works and his own personal and professional correspondence, Naiman’s papers include correspondence and other typescript and manuscript materials by many impactful twentieth-century Russian literary figures, among them Akhmatova herself, Brodsky, Sergei Dovlatov, Lidia Chukovskaya, Evgenii Rein, and Dmitrii Bobyshev.

Meet Beck Davis, PUL’s new Cataloging and Metadata Services Fellow
Princeton University Library is excited to announce the hire of Rebecca (Beck) Davis as the Cataloging and Metadata Services Fellow. Davis joined the Metadata and Enterprise Operations (MEO) Team on June 12 and has been working collaboratively with colleagues on the MEO Team to learn to transform metadata and assist in the management and configuration of the Library’s Alma system to support the Library’s various functional areas and to help enhance their operations.

PUL digitizes letter from John Brown to Frederick Douglass
Following Princeton University Library’s (PUL) acquisition of an 1861 letter from Frederick Douglass, Assistant University Librarian for Special Collections, Technical Services Alexis Antracoli revisited the Library’s General Manuscripts Miscellaneous Collection (1502-2012) to find related material. Upon closer inspection she found an interesting piece: a letter from abolitionist John Brown to Frederick Douglass.

PUL acquires 1861 letter by Frederick Douglass
Princeton University Library (PUL) has acquired another letter written by abolitionist, author, and statesman Frederick Douglass. Written in 1861 and currently housed in PUL Special Collections, the acquisition features Douglass contemplating the onset of the Civil War.

Teaching with Collections: Religious Intersections in Jerusalem
A first-year class of students visited Princeton University Library (PUL) Special Collections to visualize the importance of the city of Jerusalem to three major faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Led by Jonathan Gribetz, Associate Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies and in the Program in Judaic Studies, the seminar investigated the foundation of the holy city through a variety of sources, ranging from biblical lamentations to archeological excavations, and international political resolutions.

Democracy Prep Bronx High School students have Korean day at East Asian Library
Approximately 50 students from the Democracy Prep Bronx High School visited Princeton University on October 18 as part of the High-Versity Day project. The visit, organized by Ho Jung Choi, Director of the Korean Language Program, and with support from the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) and Princeton’s East Asian Studies Program, was part of a Korean culture week, which sought to provide effective spaces and new possibilities for the community-based language learning (CBLL) and meaningful community engagement.

New PUL fellowship program aims to address racial and ethnic disparities in the library & information science field
Princeton University Library (PUL) announced today the PUL Early Career Fellowship Program. In collaboration with Princeton University’s Office of the Provost and North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS), the program creates eight fellowship opportunities aimed at recent graduates of NCCU SLIS over the course of the next four years.

PUL remembers the life and legacy of bell hooks
bell hooks was an activist, author, feminist, poet, professor, and scholar, and from reading accounts from those who were blessed to know bell hooks personally, a phemeonal family member, friend and teacher. Trying to encompass the work of bell hooks in a few sentences is a futile task. Dr. Imani Perry stated, “I think we can’t overstate her influence.”

PUL acquires collections documenting women's experiences in early America
Until recently, Princeton University Library’s Special Collections contained a number of family papers and collections documenting the American Revolution, early national period, and the abolitionist movement, yet lacked documentation of women’s experience during this era. Over the past year, PUL acquired several collections that fill this gap and detail a range of women’s issues, from abortion trials to land inheritance.
